The HJC i71 is HJC's budget modular, the replacement for the i70: around €230, with a sun visor and ready for the SMART HJC intercom (sold separately). It is the logical modular for the city and daily commuting if you want a flip-up chin bar without breaking the bank; it is not the quietest (102 dB) or the lightest (1,726 g). Score: 8/10.

Polycarbonate shell and 1,726 g

The shell is Advanced Polycarbonate Composite (APC), HJC's polycarbonate laminate — the budget alternative to the PIM EVO of the RPHA range. On the scale it is 1,726 g (size M, Champion Helmets), a normal figure for a modular. Homologation is ECE 22.06 with P/J, so it is legal to ride open or closed.

Visor and sun visor

The main visor is the HJ-38 with a Pinlock-ready shield and a Push & Release locking system. It adds the internal HJ-V12 Dynamic Multi-Step sun shield, anti-fog and distortion-free, adjustable to taste.

Mechanism and communication

The flip-up mechanism works one-handed and holds the chin bar open securely. Like the RPHA 71, it is ready for the SMART HJC 2nd generation intercom co-developed with SENA. In noise it reaches 102 dB (Champion Helmets), the toll of the modular architecture.

Price: around €230

The price sits around €230, with a 3-year warranty from purchase (5 from manufacture). It is the pick if you want the comfort of a modular with sun visor without spending what a Shoei Neotec 3 or a Schuberth cost.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Price: around €230, unbeatable value for a modular.
  • P/J homologation: legal open and closed.
  • Sun visor: integrated, anti-fog and distortion-free.

Cons

  • Noise: 102 dB, loud at highway speed.
  • Shell: polycarbonate, heavier than premium laminates.

Verdict

The HJC i71 is the logical modular for those who want flip-up comfort and a sun visor without breaking the bank. It is not the quietest or the lightest, but at €230 it is hard to ask for more.
