For a Shark helmet with LEDs, the Skwal iCup does not automatically replace the Skwal i3. Both have brake lights, but the iCup places its light signature in a sport-styled rear spoiler and uses double D rings. The i3 keeps a micrometric buckle and can cost less when your size is discounted. The useful question is what the extra money buys, rather than which specification lists more lights.
This is a documentary comparison of European references checked on 18 October 2026, without our own physical tests. Sources are Shark specifications and documentation, the EICMA announcement and SHARP's record. We have not measured noise, comfort or visibility in traffic.

LEDs: the i3 already had intelligent braking lights
EICMA describes the iCup with a vertical strip within its spoiler and an accelerometer activating the light on deceleration, without a motorcycle connection. It presents it alongside the i3, sharing LED technology. That alone is not a reason to replace an i3 that already serves your needs.
The official i3 manual distinguishes three modes: smart brake lights; position plus brake lights; and flashing position plus brake lights. It states up to 12 hours in flashing mode and approximately three hours to charge. EICMA gives approximately 12 hours in flashing mode for the iCup. These are declared figures for a particular mode, not our measurements or a 12-hour guarantee in every condition.

The lights provide additional signalling. The consulted sources do not quantify accident reduction or establish superior safety for either helmet through its LED layout. Check charge and operation before riding; they do not replace the motorcycle's lights.
Double D or micrometric: try the action with gloves
The fastening difference affects everyday handling. On the iCup you thread and adjust the strap through the rings; on the i3 you adjust the strap and use the micrometric mechanism. Repeat the action with your gloves and check that you can secure it correctly. We do not award better helmet protection solely because a fastening uses double D rings.
This concerns the references in the table: the i3 manual also covers other fastenings depending on version. Confirm the actual helmet when buying another finish or market specification. For track use, check the organiser's requirements rather than assuming sporty styling guarantees acceptance.
Weight and safety: 15 grams do not decide fit
The difference between published figures is 15 g, both for the first shell size. These are not two helmets we weighed in the same size and configuration. The difference cannot establish lower fatigue, better aerodynamics or less noise. Try both and check even contact, retention and sun visor position with your glasses.
The Skwal i3 received four SHARP stars in September 2026. That is test information for the i3, separate from our editorial judgement. We do not transfer the rating to the iCup because of a shared brand, material or LED technology, or treat common approval as identical impact-test performance.
Actual price difference: €90, but check the size
For the consulted offers, €329.99 − €239.99 = €90. The i3 offer showed availability only in XL in that reference's public variant catalogue; the iCup was listed as available from XS to XXL. This is a snapshot, not a stock guarantee. Do not size down or up to obtain a discount.
The displayed previous i3 price was €319.99: against that reference amount, the difference would be only €10. That is why cheap i3 versus expensive iCup is not a permanent rule. Compare your size and finish, delivery, returns and box contents. The iCup's extra dark shield adds value only if you need it; use an appropriate shield for night riding and follow its markings and instructions.

Which we would choose
- i3 to save money: if a comparable discount exists in your size, fit is right and you prefer a micrometric buckle. It already includes LED braking functionality.
- iCup for its configuration: if you prefer double D rings, spoiler styling and the specific additional-shield package, after checking fit. Its extra cost does not buy demonstrated acoustic or protective superiority in this comparison.
- Already own an i3? We see no reason to replace it solely for the lights. Consider changing when it solves a particular need your current helmet does not cover.
With equivalent fit, our budget choice would be an i3 with a verifiable offer in your size. When prices are close, we would decide on fastening, equipment and design preference. Skwal i3 analysis · Shark sizing · EICMA 2026 news.
